Regional Learning and Development

A Collaborative Approach to Learning and Development Activities

The North West Training Consortium performs a central role in facilitating various collaborative approaches towards learning and development activities across the five North West Probation Areas.

Networking

The exchange of information is vital to continued high quality training. The Consortium facilitates this process across the North West Learning and Development departments by:-

  • Chairing a Monthly strategy meeting of all NW Probation Training Managers
  • Disseminating learning and development requirements from operational managers at both a National and Regional level
  • Preparing and producing a monthly Newsletter which highlights staff development initiatives across the NW region

Coordination

In addition to the exchange of information the Consortium facilitates the coordination of training across the five North West Probation Areas. This task is vital to ensure maximum use is made of all available resources and learning and development opportunities are optimised for all staff.

To undertake this task the Consortium has developed a Regional training plan to inform staff and allow managers to plan effectively.

Cooperation

As the range of learning and development activities has increased, the Consortium has increasingly helped areas to share resources equitably. This has been particularly useful in the delivery of specific training such as Domestic Violence and Sex Offender Accredited Programmes. Our role has involved negotiating the release of area trainers and facilitating jointly funded training events delivered by external trainers.

Integration

The North West Consortium has a key role to play in ensuring the integration all North West learning and development activities within a recognisable Quality Assurance framework. Operating within clearly defined quality benchmarks provides the assurance that all learning and development activities are delivered to the highest standards. An example of this approach is the introduction of a Quality Assurance audit across the North West in respect of the delivery of Probation Service Officer development.
